I recently performed a performance evaluation of a PowerGUARD® unit at a major university. After the data collection was completed I met with the Assistant Director of Utilities and Energy Services. He brought out some graphs that among other things showed reactive power. The graphs were from a single building and showed the reactive power vacillating up and down repeatedly by amounts of 150–200 kVAR. After I downloaded data collected from the performance evaluation and created graphs, the data showed a similar problem in the building we just tested—a sharp spike in reactive power when a load turned on. However what was immediately apparent also was that when the PowerGUARD® unit was on and the same load cycled on the reactive spike was markedly reduced (Graph 1).
The graphs for kW Demand and Amperage both show the reduced spikes as well. These graphs clearly show the “shock absorber” effect the PowerGUARD® has on the electrical system, as well as the reduction in the base load. It doesn’t take much for an astute Facility Engineer to understand how that can translate into hard dollars and cents—equipment will last longer and maintenance personnel won’t spend as much time repairing or replacing damaged equipment.
The US Department of Energy recently put out a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for a study “to support the research and development (R&D) of advanced tools and controls that will improve the resilience and reliability of the nation’s power grid. Under this FOA, DOE’s Office of Electricity (OE) Transmission Reliability Program will seek applications that explore the use of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning technology and tools to derive more value from the vast amounts of sensor data already being gathered and used to monitor the health of the grid and support system operations.” The blackout of 2003 was caused in part by faulty controls which led to an overloaded grid.
